Vouziers - a small village in the French district Champagne - lies exactly on the center line of the eclipse. It's a quarter to ten now, almost three hours before the eclips starts. We are quit confident the clouds will be gone before that time. The camera is pointed eastward.

The lower cloud deck dissolves while the higher cumulus clouds are pushing up. The sun peeps through now and again. Note the village down the hill: clearly, the valley we are in gets more sunshine than the surrounding hills.

The eclips starts. Luck is with us: the sun shines.

Clouds take over again.

It's getting colder. Above the village the sun still shines.

The moon is halfway now. Cows are very nosy about us; how do humans react on eclipses, they seem to think.

Orange? Hm, no thanks. (Note: humans eat oranges while eclipses are going on. They normally never eat oranges on our fields).

Things go fast. From now on the clouds gradually dissolve. The sunrays are perceptibly less strong already.

Wearing protective glasses. The cows loose interest. Large flock of lapwings in the sky.

Only a few more minutes to go. The low clouds quickly disappear now. The cumulus clouds shrink as well.

Strange, faint light. Like a shadowless evening, like colourless sunglasses.

A light veil appears between sun and earth. To the east, clouds still linger above the wooded hills.

As the sun looses strength, the light shroud before the sun disappears. Note, the cows don't react at all on the ongoing phenomenon.

Suddenly, the sun dies, the light switches off. Shouts from the village. However, it is not totally dark. It is only while looking at the pictures, I notice the clear skyline in the east. That's because the moonshadow, coming from the back/west, has not yet reached the horizon eastward.

12:26 15 - 12:26
Now watch carefully: the eastern skyline is darkening, a few seconds after the previous picture was taken. The ground before our feet seems to catch more light, but this is deceptive: the camera chooses a longer exposure time since the eastern sky is darkening.

The frail light is only partly caused by the corona around the sun The main cause is the dispersion of light from miles away through the atmosphere.

The corona is huge and beautiful. But tragically, it's not a picture that engraves itself in the mind. I can't dig it up from memory anymore. What did I see then? Venus, silent sky, a strange celestial being?

The reappearance of the sun is a matter of seconds.

12:28 19 - 12:28
During a few seconds it looks as if the dark sun, surrounded by the corona, has a bright twin sister: the sun reappears. Compare the dark eastern skyline with the pictures token just before the start of the eclips (13).

Back on earth, shouts from the village. Time to regret not having paid enough attention to the curtained sun. What the hell was I doing during these 2 minutes and 10 seconds?

12:43 21 - 12:43
Note: the sunlight gains in strength, but the atmosphere is still reacting on the chilling effect and the clouds are still shrinking. It is only later in the afternoon that heavy clouds cover the sky again.
