What is the Trail Database?

The Trail Database contains links to hiking and walking pages all over the world.

Main function is the Search Engine. Enter your trail, mountain, home page, region etc., click the button, and the database will instantly show you the relevant pages. Below is described what input is legal.

Second, the hiking links are organised per country. Third, I put my own hiking reports on this site. And lastly, I collect Handy Links to the best sites about technique, safety, manufacturers, agencies huts, equipment and so on. You will find all the search functions on the home page. Please, add your own report to the database by filling in the form on the home page. Bookmark this page. You will need it when planning a new hike!

This page is best viewed with Netscape 3.01+, Netscape 4.x or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x. Netscape Internet Explorer 3.x does not support Javascript, so the pages won't work. Keep Java-script enabled. Your computer should support 24-bit color (high color) to enjoy the photographs. A V34 modem is just right.

Country names in the Trail Database

"United Kingdom" instead of "Great Brittain"
"Netherlands" instead of "Holland"
Use English names: "Germany", and not "Deutschland"

Extended characters for Searching

Don't use them, they won't work. Just ommit the dots and stress-marks. I give you an example:

  • Instead of Ötztal, type Otztal
  • Instead of Côte d'Azur, write Cote d Azur
  • Instead of Großarl, write Grossarl

Semantics of the Search Engine

A thesaurus is searched. This means that you won't get any nonsense hits. The thesaurus contains:

  • Names of Countries, as written in English.
  • Names of Regions, usually in English, unless the indigenous name is commonly used
  • Names of Mountain Ranges, like "Alps"
  • Some names of well known Mountains, like "Mont Blanc"
  • Names of Hiking Trails, like GR5, HRP, E4, Tour du Volcan
  • Names of Home Pages, like "Gorp" or "Cambridge University Hill Walking Club"
  • Names of People who have a Hiking Home Page, like "Henk Nouws" or "Nouws"
  • Names of Hiking Themes, like "Equipment"
  • Have a look in the statistics page for the Keywords.

The thesaurus does not contain place names.

Upper case or lower case for Searching?

Makes no difference

Wild cards for Searching

They won't work. Just type the first few letters, like "unit" for "United Kingdom". Spaces in front of your search key make no sense.
